The Fountain has been a theatre building for almost seventy years. In prior incarnations it was the Evergreen Theatre, a house for experimental works between the 60’s and the 80’s. It then became a rental house, and finally it was acquired by Stephen Sachs, Managing Artistic Director and Deborah Lawlor, Producing Artistic Director, whose vision has led the group to a number of critical awards and accolades, including the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle, Drama-Logue, L.A. Weekly, and Ovation. The current company has a fine mix of young and established actors, including Malachi Throne, Robert Symonds, Priscilla Pointer, Tracy Middendorf, Salome Jens, and Phillip Anglim. With the addition of Simon Levy as Producing Director/Dramaturg, Lawlor, Stephens, Randee Trabitz, and Hope Alexander share the excitement of producing and directing new and established plays, offer an HIV/AIDS acting workshop, have developed a Children’s Theatre program in connection with a local elementary school, and provide acting workshops that represent a diverse and culturally interesting mix of opportunities. Kathi O’Donohue, their Resident Lighting Designer, has won a number of awards for her achievements. The group is headed by a Board of Directors who oversee the expanding vision for the theatre. They anticipate acquiring another building in Los Angeles so they have an additional stage. The purpose for this new outreach is to recognize and embrace the diversity that makes up the city. As they grow, their hope is to gain a national reputation by delivering new works that give statement to their mission. The group is funded by such diverse organizations as The National Endowment of the Arts, The Los Angeles County Arts Commission, The Los Angeles Times, AIDS Project Los Angeles, The Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, Los Angeles Unified School District, Toyota, Inc. and McDonald’s, Inc., just to name a few. An interesting sidebar is that the The Fountain Theatre, besides doing a full season of productions, is also the foremost presenter of Flamenco on the West Coast. Focus on dance and outreach that helps youth discover and appreciate theatre are two strong commitments of which they are particularly proud.5060 Fountain Ave.Los Angeles, CA 90029 |
