The American Revolution
By Jana J. Monji
The Inverse Theater isn't Broadway, although it's on the same island. This is a low-budget theme theater where patrons sit on hard metal fold-out chairs. It produces new American verse plays without a mind or care about commercial sensibilities. Los Angeles audiences recently got a taste of artistic director Kirk Wood Bromley's vision when his Want's Unwished Work came to the Sacred Fools in early 1999.
I saw The American Revolution, an experimental piece that featured a noble George Washington (played without drag, but with great dignity by Sheri Graubert) and various other heroes, some with vibrant blue eye shadow and most with various grunge attire. With a very short run (two weekends), there's no telling if this promising piece will be produced again or when. Bromley is reportedly working on the new piece to be performed from December 1-31, 1999, titled, The Millennium Play.
