LOS ANGELES DRAMA CRITICS CIRCLE ANNOUNCES WINNERS FOR 2002
By Diana Ford

Nominating and awarding an artist’s work is serious business! The thirty-fourth annual LADCC Awards recently held at the Colony Theater confirmed again that LADCC takes its job seriously and that theater is alive and well in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

“Why?” from The Big Voice: God or Merman? written and performed by Steve Schalchlin and Jim Brochu cleverly led into a welcome from LADCC President, Terry Morgan. He stated that over nineteen hundred performances were seen by the twenty-one members of LADCC last year.

Witty hosts Eileen T’Kay, 2001 Featured Performance Winner, and Critic Wenzel Jones balanced a program of comic banter and heartfelt appreciation, beginning with a basket of prizes offered for the shortest acceptance speech.
Popular critic Polly Warfield received a standing ovation when she appeared on stage to present the Polly Warfield Award to Barbara Beckley for the Colony Theater’s excellent season/year in a small-to-mid-sized theater. The audience stood again as actress Gena Rowlands was introduced to present longtime friend, Robert Fieldsteel, The Ted Schmidt Award for the world premiere of an outstanding new play, Crazy Drunk.
Intermingled with the awards, Gigi Bermingham, winner of the Natalie Schafer Award, delighted us with her rendition of “La Vie en Rose”, and Paul Witten and Joe Hart performed a scene from the award winning,The Woman in Black, directed and staged by Ken Sawyer.
Other memorable moments included: fifteen year old Eddie Karr receiving an award for his lead performance in The Visible Horse,Eddie Jones speaking of the life-changing experience for him in his award-wining role as Willie Loman in “Death of a Salesman”, the genuine thrill of the winning ensemble cast of “Direct From Death Row: The Scottsboro Boys”, and Carol Lawrence's genuine surprise when she was called up for her award winning performance in Amy’s View, a show, as she put it, “without a tap.”
Produced by Terri Roberts, the 2002 Drama Critic Circle Awards can boast another successful year!
