25TH ANNIVERSARY ROBBY NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED
Cast from Aida
By Rob Stevens
It seems like it was just a few years ago when, as a child prodigy theater critic, I began listing my Best of the Year in Theater and calling them the Robby Awards, because Tony, Oscar, and Emmy were already taken. Now here are the nominations for the 25th Anniversary awards. What started very small, with a just a listing of winners and runner-ups in the first publication I reviewed for, Showtime, has grown into a behemoth that won’t stop growing. The first actual awards show took place at the Continental Club, next door to the Continental Trailways bus station, in Hollywood in March, 1981, with about 100 people in attendance. Last year’s show at the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel featured standing-room-only tickets and a crowd of 370. Monday, February 25, 2002 is the date for the 25th Anniversary Robby Awards. The place is the El Portal Theatre, 5269 Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour in the spacious lobby of the theater. Hot and cold hors d’oeuvres will be served and there will be a no-host bar. The awards show will begin on the MainStage at 7:30 p.m. Jason Graae will be one of the hosts for the evening. Considering the nature of this insider crowd, the humor should be wicked. Performing songs from previous Robby Award winning musicals are George Ball, Eileen Barnett, Stephanie Block, David Engel, Amanda McBroom, Sharon McKnight, Bets Malone, Debbie Prutsman, Larry Raben, John Raitt, Teri Ralston, Lisa Richard, Clark Sterling and Victoria Strong. Other presenters include former Robby Award winners Priscilla Barnes, Lynnda Ferguson, Ray Limon, Lee Martino, Flora Plumb, Marcia Rodd, Del Shores, Joan Van Ark, Ann Winkowski and Stephanie Zimbalist. A first-ever, seven piece Robby band will be conducted by Steven Applegate.
In addition to awards in the 27 categories that follow, special awards will be presented to Mark Savage, for his adaptation of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pinafore!, and Paul Hadobas, for his script compilation and adaptation of Frank Wildhorn/Leslie Bricusse’s Jekyll & Hyde. Once again scheduled to receive a Lifetime Robby Award is Nan Martin (she was rained out last year). Tickets for the event are $30 in advance, $35 at the door. Seating is unreserved. Tickets may be purchased by sending a check made payable to Rob Stevens to 7985 Santa Monica Blvd. #210, Los Angeles, CA 90046. For more information: 323-656-9407 or email to robstevens@mediaone.net.

The Robby Awards are presented by theater critic Rob Stevens based on shows he saw during 2001 from San Diego to Paso Robles, from Riverside to Long Beach. Leading the way again in total nominations, as it has for each of the past 15 years, is Costa Mesa’s South Coast Repertory with 30. Coming in second were Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre and Performance Riverside with 16 nominations each. L.A.’s Reprise!Broadway’s Best gathered 13, while Civic Light Opera of South Bay Cities and Glendale’s A Noise Within each collected 12. Among L.A.’s 99-seat theaters, North Hollywood’s Deaf West Theatre led with 9 nominations. The Ahmanson’s presentation of Disney Theatricals’ Aida earned the most nods for a production with 12. The Shubert Theatre’s Mamma Mia! and Santa Barbara’s production of Triumph of Love both gathered 10. Fullerton Civic Light Opera’s Jekyll & Hyde and A Noise Within’s Hay Fever each collected 9. SCR’s Much Ado About Nothing and A Delicate Balance each received 8 nominations, as did the El Portal’s The Last of Mrs. Lincoln and Ventura’s Rubicon Theatre’s The Boys Next Door. A complete listing of all nominations follow.
